Brand New Changing Rooms open at Barry Island

Visitors to Barry Island can now enjoy brand-new shower and changing facilities following a significant investment to improve the seaside experience.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council is delighted to confirm that works on the new facilities are now fully complete and open for public use. The project represents a major milestone in the Council’s ongoing efforts to enhance visitor experience across the county.

More than £530,000 was secured last year through the Welsh Government Brilliant Basics programme, supporting a series of improvements at some of the Vale’s most popular visitor locations.

Improving Visitor Facilities Across the Vale

As part of this funding, £300,000 was awarded to Countryside Services to refurbish toilet facilities at Cosmeston Country Park and Porthkerry Country Park, improving comfort and accessibility for park visitors. Works at both locations are now also complete.

At Barry Island, the visitor improvement project includes:

  • 12  brand-new changing rooms, including single, family, and wheelchair-accessible cubicles
  • Outdoor showers for beach users
  • 8 new beach wheelchairs to improve accessibility
  • ‍Improved  storage within the accessible Changing Places facility
  • Digital water quality display boards, which will be installed soon

The Barry Island changing facilities are free to use, helping make the beach experience more comfortable and accessible for everyone all year round.

A Commitment to Quality Public Spaces

Bronwen Brooks, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places at the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said:

“We’re thrilled to see that these new and improved facilities at one of the Vale’s most beloved destinations are now open for visitors to use and enjoy.

The brand-new showers and changing areas at Barry Island, together with the refurbished toilets at Cosmeston and Porthkerry Country Parks, demonstrate our continued commitment to providing high-quality public spaces that are both fit for purpose and accessible to all.”

These improvements form part of a wider effort to ensure that visitors and residents alike can enjoy the Vale’s coastline, parks and attractions with modern, accessible facilities.
